ABC News Investigation: The Blueberry Children
"As adolescents in the 70's and 80's, my sisters and I were forced to pick blueberries in farms in South Jersey. The owners of the farms were fully aware that we, as well as other children, were too young to work but chose to look the other way. I personally don't blame them, although, if they would have complied with the labor laws, my parents would have had no choice but to also abide by the law. I blame my parents for waking us up at 4:00 a.m. every day during blueberry season (mid June to mid August) only to endure pesticides, insect bites, sunburn, and don't get me started on how our father used to discipline us physically and mentally if we didn't pick the berries fast enough..."
